Car seat safety is one of those things all parents should educate themselves on. In fact, the numbers are quite scary when it comes to automobile accidents in the USA. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in 2015, 663 children under the age of 12 died while they were in the car during a motor vehicle accident. In 2014, an astounding 121K+ were injured after a motor vehicle accident.
Here’s where the car seat safety importance really comes in. The CDC reports that approximately 35% of the children who died, as the results of a car crash, were not buckled up. Another study found that around 618K children, between the ages of 0-12, rode is vehicle without proper restraint some of the time.
Have you ever been involved in a car accident? If so, you know how fast they can happen. You know how scary they are. In fact, I have my own story to tell. Thankfully, this accident happened prior to my children being born.
In 2008, I was in a pretty bad car accident. Around 8pm, I was heading home from work. I was driving down a popular, local 4-lane highway. In the blink of eye, I woke up, in my car, surrounded by smoke and fire. My car was wedged between a “No Parking” and “Wrong Way” sign in front of a brick building. I attempted to open my driver’s side door to get out of the car. But, I couldn’t open the car door.
That’s when I saw a frantic man running towards my car. He opened the passenger door and lifted me from the car, bringing me to the highway curb. The accident had knocked me conscious. There was glass in my chin. My body was bruised. I even had a bruise mark across my chest the resembled my seat belt. I was rushed to the hospital. After about 10 hours at the hospital, they released me to go home.
The accident wasn’t my fault. An older lady, who had just left a 12+ hour shift at work, fell asleep at the wheel. During this time, she crossed the median and t-boned me. If I wasn’t wearing my seat belt, there’s no telling how bad this could’ve been. Thankfully, I’ve ALWAYS been an avid seat belt wearer.
That is only ONE reason why I preach on car seat safety.
I can’t imagine the horror if my children would’ve been with me. I can’t imagine the horror if I wouldn’t have had my seat belt on. Imagine if my children would’ve been with me. If I wasn’t educated on proper car seat safety and they weren’t properly restrained. Without a doubt, it would’ve been the most horrific situation in my life.
Many people think the straps are the only thing that should be secure. But, having the car seat properly installed in important, too. As well as ensuring that the car you’re driving is safe for you and your family.
Cars.com offers an extensive view on different cars and car seat safety checks that you can check out here. They review car safety in popular models like the Nissan Rogue and Chevrolet Equinox. As well as many other popular models.
So, before you drive with your children, ensure their car seat is properly installed. Also ensure that they are properly strapped in. Because, like I said above, a car accident can happen in the blink of an eye.
